FAQ

What Is the Adopt-A-Pilot Program?

It is a chance for students to interact with Southwest Pilots to discover more than how an airplane flies – to learn how education is critical in reaching personal goals.

What Does an “Adopted” Pilot Do?
  • “Adopted” Pilots visit the classroom once a week throughout the four-week long program.
  • Pilots lead students in the Adopt-A-Pilot curriculum (Flight Plan), answer questions, and interact with activities while inspiring students to believe in themselves and pursue goal-setting.
  • Pilots provide the classroom with their weekly flight schedule and correspond with students via e-mail, photos, and postcards.
What Do Students Do?

Students track their Pilot’s journey on a United States map and complete math, science, geography, research, public speaking, and language arts activities that bring learning to life.

Students are encouraged to consider future careers and the education and skills it takes to pursue the various careers they are interested in.

Tell Me More About the AAP Curriculum.

The multidisciplinary Adopt-A-Pilot curriculum was developed in cooperation with the Smithsonian Institute’s National Air and Space Museum, the National Association of Teachers of Math, and other educational specialists.

What Will Students Learn?

Along with curriculum lessons, Adopt-A-Pilot reinforces important messages such as:

  • Education is important – stay in school
  • Just like parents and teachers, the community cares about each child
  • Learning is fun
  • Future goals are possible through planning, hard work, and determination.
Where Can I Learn More About Adopt-A-Pilot?

Since 1997, the Adopt-A-Pilot program has reached more than 140,000 students nationwide. The award-winning program has earned the praise of leaders such as General Colin Powell, President Bill Clinton, First Lady Laura Bush, and others.
