Careers in Aviation – Ever wondered what kinds of jobs are possible in the aviation industry? The following videos offer students a brief introduction into the many high-flying aviation careers.
- Pilot (view streaming video) – Our Pilots are highly trained professionals who fly our fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft. Pilots at Southwest help safely transport our Customers all over the nation. Our planes require a Team of two Pilots--a Captain and a First Officer. Together they fly the aircraft, communicate with air traffic control, and monitor the many instruments in the cockpit.
- Flight Attendant (view streaming video) – Our wonderful Flight Attendants assist you once you are on the plane. Their first priority is your safety. In addition, our Flight Attendants make the flight more pleasurable by serving you refreshments, snacks, and, at Southwest, a bit of humor.
- Customer Service Agent (view streaming video) – Our friendly and helpful Customer Service Agents are responsible for many tasks to get you ready to board a plane. They begin by selling you a ticket if you have not already purchased one. They also are in charge of issuing boarding passes and checking your luggage. In addition, our Customer Service Agents have to be very knowledgeable about the airline because they are there to answer any questions you might have.
- Operations Agent (view streaming video) – Operations Agents provide courteous service to all of our Southwest Airlines Customers as they board and deplane the aircraft. Our agents coordinate ramp, operations, provisioning, and service functions to make sure that the flight departs and arrives on time. They also calculate the weight and balance of the aircraft so that the Pilots can plan their takeoffs and landings accordingly.
- Reservations Sales Agent (view streaming video) – Our friendly Reservation Sales Agents answer our reservations number (1 800 435-9792). They book your reservations, confirm and sell your Ticketless reservations, and provide information about flights and airports over the phone. They must be very knowledgeable because they answer the many questions our Customers have about their trips.
- Flight Dispatcher (view streaming video) – If there is a plane in the air, this group knows about it. A flight dispatcher is in charge of creating the flight plans and schedules that will work the best for the Customers and Southwest. They have a lot of responsibility because they have to work around the weather while considering fuel, the weight of the planes, and having to negotiate with other planes in the air.
- Ramp Agent (view streaming video) – Ramp Agents play a very important role in the airline industry. Ramp Agents are in charge of handling all the cargo and baggage that is loaded and unloaded off each airplane. In addition, they direct the aircraft into the gate and push it away from the gate when it’s time to depart. At times, they must work in extreme weather and cannot let it affect the way that they treat each cargo or baggage item.
- Provisioning Agent (view streaming video) – With so many supplies needed for each aircraft, Provisioning Agents have a lot to handle. They are responsible for making sure that every plane is fully stocked with all the supplies that it needs to fly and keep the Southwest Customers happy.
- Mechanic (view streaming video) – Mechanics have the important job of maintaining the airplanes in perfect condition so that they are ready to fly. They handle all the repairs and inspect every part of the aircraft so that it remains a finely tuned flying machine. Mechanics have a lot of parts to inspect, test, and work on. It is a constant learning process.
