Travel Tips

  • Ask the Right Questions…
Whether you’re traveling for business or pleasure, it’s your personal time away from home. Do what you can to ensure it’s as enjoyable as possible. Contact the hotel and ask about their history of dealing with gay couples or families. How are they treated? What’s their policy regarding GLBT guests? How they answer you will speak volumes about how they’ll treat you, your family, and your friends.
  • Safety First…
Safety should always be a concern when traveling. Give a copy of your itinerary and contact information to a family member or friend who will know your whereabouts in case of an emergency.
  • In Case of an Emergency…
    Always be prepared.
    • Store an “in case of emergency” number on your cell phone. Also, bring copies of important papers. You and your partner’s power of attorney, medical directive authorization, and your child’s (or children’s) birth certificates and/or legal guardianship papers.
  • Medication Preparation…
Be sure to keep all medication with you in your carry on luggage. The unexpected weather delay or case of heartburn might not wait for relief!
  • Stay Hydrated…
Dehydration while flying is common due to low humidity in aircraft. Drink at least eight (8) ounces of water for every hour en route. Alcohol and caffeine can contribute to dehydration, so minimize your intake.
  • Keep a Journal…
Jot down some memorable notes from your experience or keep a travel journal to share with your family and friends. Note your likes and dislikes about places you visit, and that could be valuable “insider information” for family or friends who are planning similar getaways or vacations.
