You now have more time to enjoy your earned tier status and use your travel funds.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we understand Customers might be uncertain about their travel plans in the months ahead. While we might not be connecting with you in person right now, today and every day as the airline with Heart, we can share our love and support. In that spirit, we are extending the benefits earned by our current tier status Members and Companion Pass holders and the expiration date of select travel funds.

In addition to this extension, we’re giving tier qualifying points and companion pass qualifying points to all Rapid Rewards® Members to say thank you for bearing with us during this difficult and uncharted time.

We’re staying Southwest® Heart Strong for you and will be here with a warm welcome, when you’re ready to travel again.

We’re extending tier status and Companion Pass benefits.

  • For Companion Pass holders, who earned Companion Pass benefits through December 31, 2020, we are extending your current Companion Pass benefits through June 30, 2021.
  • For A-List and A-List Preferred Members who earned A-List or A-List Preferred status through December 31, 2020 and not through any type of promotion, we are extending your current earned status through December 31, 2021.
    • For Members enrolled in a promotion granting promotional A-List status or challenging a Member to extend promotional A-List status such as Status Match, Tier Challenge, Tier Experience, or a Corporate Status Challenge and who met the flight requirements by the promotion end date, we are extending your current promotional status through December 31, 2021. However, for Members enrolled in any of the above promotions and who to date have not met the flight requirements, we are extending the deadline to meet the promotion’s flight requirements to October 30, 2020.

These extensions will happen automatically and will be reflected in the My Account page of your Rapid Rewards® account over the coming weeks.

We’re boosting your point balance.

We are making it easier for Rapid Rewards Members to earn tier status and Companion Pass this year by giving everyone 15,000 tier qualifying points (TQPs), 10 qualifying one-way flight segments toward tier status, 25,000 Companion Pass qualifying points (CPQPs), and 25 qualifying one-way flight segments toward Companion Pass. This added boost will accelerate your progress toward achieving tier status and Companion Pass in 2020. As an example, for a Rapid Rewards Member who has not earned any TQPs or CPQPs in 2020 or flown any qualifying one-way flight segments toward earning tier status or Companion Pass in 2020, this Rapid Rewards Member will get a boost toward earning tier status or Companion Pass as shown in this table below:

* These TQPs and CPQPs cannot be redeemed for travel or through More Rewards, transferred, or donated. These TQPs and CPQPs are only available toward tier status or Companion Pass qualification calculations.

No action is necessary on your part—the 15,000 tier qualifying points, 25,000 Companion Pass qualifying points, and flight segments will be deposited into all Members’ accounts in the coming weeks. Tier qualifying points, Companion Pass qualifying points, and flight segments will be given to any Member who opened a Rapid Rewards account by April 1, 2020.

Select travel funds extended through September 7, 2022.

Previously, Customers’ travel funds that have expired or would have expired between March 1 – June 30, 2020, or travel funds created because of a cancellation between March 1 – June 30, 2020, had an expiration date of June 30, 2021. Now we are expanding the window of funds eligible for extended expiration dates and extending the expiration date of these funds. Funds that are set to expire or funds that are created between March 1, 2020 and September 7, 2020, will have an expiration date of September 7, 2022.

This gives Customers who had travel funds created in connection with this pandemic—or who won’t be comfortable traveling this summer—additional time to retake that same trip or explore a different destination. It also gives those Rapid Rewards Members who are working toward earning tier status or a Companion Pass more opportunities to fly by their respective qualifying deadlines.

It will take our Technology Team a few days to make these changes. It’s important to note, while these unused travel funds will be available until September 7, 2022, once the funds are used to make a purchase, the expiration date of the travel funds will then follow our normal ticketing rules and will expire 12 months from the date of purchase.

For example:

  • Your original unused travel funds with confirmation number OLD111 expired on March 19, 2020.
  • These unused travel funds were extended to an expiration date of September 7, 2022.
  • You use some of those funds on August 1, 2020 to book new travel in September under confirmation number NEW111.
  • If for some reason you need to cancel this new flight, your unused travel funds associated with confirmation number NEW111 will be valid for 12 months from the booking date which means they will expire August 1, 2021.
  • Any remaining unused travel funds tied to OLD111 will be available through September 7, 2022.

Option to convert select travel funds into Rapid Rewards® points.

We have added a new benefit for our valued Rapid Rewards Members. Those Members who have travel funds that are set to expire or funds that are created between March 1, 2020 and September 7, 2020 will have the option to convert those travel funds into Rapid Rewards points at the same rate you would be able to purchase a ticket with points today. We hope this provides our Members ultimate flexibility as Rapid Rewards points never expire, never have cancel or change fees (fare difference may apply), and you can redeem your points for anyone you choose.

Our Technology Team is working to build this conversion capability, and we will be in touch when it is ready for you to use. In the meantime, you don’t need to take any action—your travel funds will be automatically extended for the two years mentioned above, and you will be able to make this conversion once we bring this new functionality to fruition.

There is no need to re-start the challenge. For Members enrolled in a Status Match Challenge and who to date have not met the flight requirements, we are extending the deadline to meet the promotion’s flight requirements to October 30, 2020.

All Rapid Rewards Members who opened a Rapid Rewards account by April 1, 2020 are eligible and will automatically receive a 15,000 tier qualifying point (TQPs) boost, a 25,000 Companion Pass qualifying point (CPQPs) boost and flight segments into their accounts in the coming weeks.

No registration is needed. The TQPs, CPQPs, and flight segments will be reflected in your Rapid Rewards account in the coming weeks.
