    Southwest Airlines® is aware that government mandates have resulted in restrictions on air travel due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, many of the restrictions will result in flight cancellations, potential quarantines or COVID-19 testing upon arrival, and/or temperature checks upon landing. Rest assured, our Team will notify you of these restrictions as soon as possible, offer maximum flexibility, and work to accommodate Customers to the best of our ability. As always, the Southwest Team appreciates your patience and trust in us during this unprecedented time.

    Canceling your Southwest flight

    Southwest is unique in the airline industry because we do not charge fees to change or cancel flights. Nonrefundable tickets (Wanna Get Away fares) not flown on the travel date, but canceled in accordance with Southwest’s No Show policy, can be applied to future travel. Refundable tickets (Anytime and Business Select® fares) not flown on the travel date can also be applied to future travel.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Yes. Federal law requires each person (ages 2 and over) to wear a mask at all times in the airport and throughout the flight, including during boarding and deplaning. Refusing to wear a mask is a violation of federal law and may result in denial of boarding, removal from the aircraft, and/or penalties under federal law. A properly worn mask completely covers the nose and mouth, is secured to the head, and fits snugly against the side of the face. Please click here for more information on this mask policy.

    Starting November 8, the U.S. Government will require anyone traveling into the United States to provide COVID-19-related documentation and contact tracing information. If you're not a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, U.S. lawful permanent resident, or an immigrant, your requirements for entry are different and can be found here

    What you need to do

    Submit an attestation (written documentation) to the U.S. Government, through Southwest®, that you are COVID-19 negative or have recently recovered from COVID-19. Each Passenger will be required to submit a form. If you are traveling with others, they will also have to fill out the form. If you do not complete the form prior to arriving at the airport, you will need to do so at the airport prior to boarding.


    Before boarding, every Southwest Airlines® Passenger will need to give us an address where you can be reached once you land in the U.S. Every U.S. citizen, U.S. national, U.S. lawful permanent resident, and immigrant must show all of the documentation below depending on which group you're in:


    If you're fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (18 and up)

    1. A negative PCR or antigen test within 3 days (72 hours) before your flight into the U.S. or proof of recovery if you've recovered from COVID-19 in the last 90 days
    2. Proof of an approved COVID-19 vaccination1

    If you're not fully vaccinated/unvaccinated against COVID-19 (18 and up)

    1. Provide a negative PCR or antigen test within 1 day (24 hours) before your flight into the U.S. or proof of recovery if you've recovered from COVID-19 in the last 90 days

    Travelers ages 2-17

    • When traveling with a fully vaccinated adult, a child must provide a negative PCR or antigen test taken within 3 days (72 hours) before their flight into the U.S. or proof of recovery if the child has recovered from COVID-19 in the last 90 days
    • When traveling with a not fully vaccinated/unvaccinated adult, a child must provide a negative PCR or antigen test taken within 1 day (24 hours) before their flight into the U.S. or proof of recovery if the child has recovered from COVID-19 in the last 90 days

    Everyone will need to show a paper or electronic copy of the required documentation above. If you don't have proof of a negative test or recovery from COVID-19, and choose not to take a test, you will not be allowed to board. If you are providing proof of recovery instead of a negative test, you will need a signed letter from a licensed healthcare provider or public health official stating you have been cleared for travel.


    1You must provide proof that you have received a vaccine that is currently either authorized for emergency use or approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, or are emergency use listed (EUL) or approved by the World Health Organization (WHO).     The U.S. Government now requires every U.S. citizen, U.S. national, U.S. lawful permanent resident, and immigrant traveling into the United States to provide COVID-19-related documentation and contact tracing information. If you’re not a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, U.S. lawful permanent resident, or an immigrant, your requirements for entry are different and can be found here.

    What you’ll need:

    To avoid longer processing times at the airport, complete each of these steps before arriving at the airport for your trip from Costa Rica to the U.S.:

    1. Submit an attestation form through Southwest to the U.S. Government that confirms you are negative for COVID-19 or have recently recovered from COVID-19. Each Passenger must submit a form (if you are traveling with others, they will also have to fill out the form) within 72 hours of your trip. You can find that form here, but will be unable to complete it until you are within the 72 hour window. If you don’t complete the form before you get to the airport, you'll need to do so at the airport before boarding and may be subject to long lines
    2. Bring proof of your negative qualifying COVID-19 test results or proof of your recent recovery from COVID-19, which could be either of the following:
      • A physical or electronic copy of a qualifying negative COVID-19 viral test taken within 3 days (72 hours) if fully vaccinated from COVID-19, and within 1 day (24 hours) if not fully vaccinated/unvaccinated from COVID-19, before your flight’s departure to the U.S. Your negative test result must include:
        1. Your government issued name or passport number
        2. Specimen collection date (within the past 3 days or 1 day depending on your COVID-19 vaccination status)
        3. The lab or physician’s name
      • Proof that you recovered from COVID-19 within the last 90 days including both a signed letter on letterhead from a licensed healthcare provider or public health official that you have recovered from COVID-19 and are ‘cleared for travel’ and includes the name, address, and phone number of the provider AND a physical or electronic copy of a positive COVID-19 viral test result taken within 90 days before your flight to the U.S.. Your positive test result must include your government issued name or passport number, specimen collection date (within 90 calendar days), and the lab or physician’s name.
    3. If you are providing a negative test within 3 days (72 hours) before your flight, you will also need to provide proof that you are fully vaccinated. You must provide proof that you have received a vaccine that is currently either authorized for emergency use or approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, or are emergency use listed (EUL) or approved by the World Health Organization (WHO). Visit the CDC website to determine if you’re fully vaccinated
    4. In addition to the above, before boarding, every Southwest Airlines® Passenger will need to give us an address where you can be reached once you land in the U.S. You will be asked to give your:
      • Your name (last, first, and, if applicable, middle or others)
      • Where you're staying while in the U.S. (full address: number, street, city, state, and zip code)
      • Primary phone number including country code
      • Secondary phone number including country code
      • Email address

    The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) requires all Passengers boarding an international flight to the U.S. to provide their contact information as listed below within 72 hours before their flight departs. The information may be used by U.S. public health officials to follow up with Passengers who may have been exposed to a contagious disease before or during travel. If there was exposure, public health officials have the information they need to enable prompt public health follow-up such as contacting those who may have been exposed and monitoring their health for signs and symptoms.

    Who is required to give contact tracing information?

    Any Passenger flying into the U.S. from an international destination.


    Where is this information being sent and stored?

    This information, as well as the contact information you provided when you bought your ticket or checked in, will be shared with the U.S. Government via established U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) data systems.

    Southwest Airlines will keep this information in our systems no longer than necessary to meet the CDC’s contact tracing requirements .

    Do I have to update my contact tracing information for each trip?

    Yes, you'll need to give contact tracing information for every international trip you take when coming into the U.S. (prior to check-in).


    What happens if I do not give contact tracing information?

    Unfortunately, you will not be allowed to board your flight. We are required to collect contact tracing information for every Passenger to check you in, and if we don't check you in, you can’t board.

    Public reporting burden of this collection of information is estimated to average 2 minutes per response, including the time for reviewing instructions, searching existing data sources, gathering and maintaining the data needed, and completing and reviewing the collection of information. An agency may not conduct or sponsor, and a person is not required to respond to a collection of information unless it displays a currently valid OMB Control Number.     Privacy Act Statement

    The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) requires airlines and other aircraft operators to collect this information pursuant to 42 C.F.R. §§ 71.4, 71.20, 71.31 and 71.32, as authorized by 42 U.S.C. §§ 264 and 268. Providing this information is mandatory for all passengers arriving by aircraft into the United States. Passengers are required to provide complete and accurate information, and failure to do so may lead to other consequences, including criminal penalties. CDC will use this information to help prevent the introduction, transmission, and spread of communicable diseases by performing contact tracing investigations and notifying exposed individuals and public health authorities; and for health education, treatment, prophylaxis, or other appropriate public health interventions, including the implementation of travel restrictions.     Nonrefundable tickets (Wanna Get Away fares) not flown on the travel date, but canceled in accordance with Southwest’s No Show Policy, can be applied to future travel for up to one year from the original purchase date or by the earliest expiration date of the applied funds aside from the below exceptions.

    All travel funds must be used by the individual named on the ticket.

    Refundable tickets not flown on the travel date can also be applied to future travel.

    Southwest does not charge fees to change or cancel flights, although applicable fare differences may apply.

    Both an electrostatic disinfectant and an anti-microbial spray are applied on every surface of the aircraft, killing viruses on contact and forming an anti-microbial coating or shield for 30 days.

    Every night, we deep clean each plane from nose to tail for more than 6 hours.

    Additionally, we equip all our aircraft with a HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter, which filters the recirculated air onboard each plane to remove airborne particles (HEPA filters are also used in hospitals).
