We’re making some important changes to Rapid Rewards®.
In order to keep our award-winning loyalty program the best it can be, we’re making some updates to Rapid Rewards. These updates will roll out individually over the next several months, starting in October 2019.
We believe the points you earn should be yours forever. That’s why you now have the freedom to keep all of your points without needing to have qualifying activity. No expiration means your points will be available to use whenever you want—even if that’s years from now.
We know how important it is to experience new places with family and friends, which is why we created the unparalleled benefit of Companion Pass.2 To continue offering unlimited flights for Companions when flying with their Companion Pass holder, we're increasing the points required to earn a Companion Pass from 110,000 to 125,000 beginning January 1, 2020.
While you will have to go a little bit further to qualify for a Companion Pass, you’ll still get all the fantastic perks you’ve always enjoyed:
The ability to bring your favorite plus one along as many times as you want free of airline charges (excluding one-way taxes and fees from $5.60).3
The option to change the name of your Companion up to three times in a calendar year.
The chance to use your Companion Pass for the remainder of the year you earned it, plus the entire following calendar year.
Don’t worry, for those earning a Companion Pass through flights, you can still earn yours by flying 100 qualifying one-way flights. If you are currently working toward a Companion Pass through points, you can still earn it with 110,000 qualifying points through December 31, 2019. Your Companion Pass benefits will begin the day you earn it and continue through December 31, 2020.

Having the freedom of same-day standby can mean heading home earlier when your plans change last minute. We know how much this benefit means to our A-List and A-List Preferred Members.2 In order to keep offering same-day standby free of airline charges4, starting January 1, 2021, anyone who changes their itinerary using same-day standby will be responsible for any additional government taxes and fees that may result.4 On the day of travel, please see a Customer Service Agent at the airport when using this benefit and to learn more about any additional government taxes and fees.
1Companion Pass qualifying points are earned from revenue flights booked through Southwest®, points earned on Rapid Rewards® Credit Cards, and base points earned from Rapid Rewards partners. The following do not qualify as Companion Pass qualifying points: purchased points; points transferred between Members; points converted from hotel and car loyalty programs, e-Rewards®, Valued Opinions, and Diners Club®; points earned from Rapid Rewards program enrollment; tier bonus points; flight bonus points; and partner bonus points (excluding bonus points earned on Rapid Rewards Credit Cards from Chase).

On or before December 31, 2020, A-List and A-List Preferred Members will have free same-day standby benefits. Beginning January 1, 2021, A-List and A-List Preferred Members will have same-day standby benefits free of airline charges, but will be required to pay any additional government taxes and fees associated with changes in their itinerary. Please see a Customer Service Agent at the airport for information regarding any additional government taxes and fees. If an A-List or A-List Preferred Member is traveling on a multiple-Passenger reservation, same-day standby and priority standby will not be provided for non-A-List or non-A-List Preferred Members in the same reservation.
