Sun, sand, a rich cultural history—Cozumel has it all. Located just 12 miles off the Yucatán Peninsula and 45 miles south of Cancun in the clear waters of the Caribbean Sea, Cozumel is known for its beautiful white sand beaches, extraordinary snorkeling and diving opportunities, and Mayan roots. Before the arrival of Europeans, the Mayan people inhabited the island for centuries. Today, it’s still possible to visit the ruins of this pre-Columbian civilization, including San Gervasio, an important archeological site built in 800 AD that’s connected to Ixchel, the Mayan goddess of fertility. History buffs may also want to take a ferry ride to the mainland Yucatán Peninsula to see even more ancient Mayan sites, including Tulum and Chichen Itza.
After you’ve had your fill of touring the land, it’s time to take a dip in the sea. Cozumel is a favorite destination of scuba divers and snorkelers alike for its warm waters and diverse marine wildlife. Palancar Reef is a popular spot, located on the southwestern side of the island and home to a number of endangered species, including the queen conch, black coral, and the loggerhead sea turtle. Other popular snorkeling and diving spots include the Maracaibo Reef, Paraíso Reef, and the Santa Rosa Wall. No matter which dive you choose, look forward to catching a glimpse of angelfish, sunfish, sea turtles, and nurse sharks.
When you’re ready to return to city life, San Miguel de Cozumel, the island’s capital city, is home to the Island Museum as well as great shopping and dining. End your day with a sampling of Yucatán cuisine, like freshly caught grilled snapper and grouper, tacos flavored with onions and sour oranges, and, of course, a cool agua fresca.
