Mexico is calling. Lovers of ecotourism, rejoice: Southwest® flies to the island of Cozumel, a popular destination for lovers of sun, surf, flora, and fauna. When you deplane at Cozumel International Airport, it’ll only be a matter of time before you find yourself drawn to the Caribbean Sea. Off the western edge of the island are well-developed coral reefs, though they may also be found in several areas offshore. Scuba divers and snorkelers are sure to love the myriad opportunities to explore thriving underwater gardens. Not a diver? Not a problem! Cozumel features a submarine that’ll take tourists down to view the underwater wonders. If you love the water but prefer to stay above it, try parasailing, kayaking, or canoeing. Or stay out of the water altogether while admiring the sea life—Cozumel is home to two dolphinariums.
If you’d prefer to stay on land, there’s plenty else to do outdoors. Find zip lining, hang gliding, rappelling, bicycle tours—explore the island’s biodiversity is also an adventure! If you find yourself visiting in Cozumel in February, make sure to take a peek at the Cozumel Carnival festivities. Established in the mid-1800s and starting the week before Mardi Gras, Cozumel Carnival is one of the oldest, most important carnivals in Mexico. It is also a traditional heritage event for Cozumel’s state, Quintana Roo.
Feeling extra adventurous? Hop on the ferry to mainland Playa del Carmen at San Miguel and explore Mexico from the other side of the Cozumel Channel. Here you’ll find shopping, nightlife, and other sightseeing favorites.
