  • Children ages five through 11 traveling without an accompanying Passenger age 12 or older must travel as Unaccompanied Minors (UMs) on Southwest Airlines.
  • For travel booked on or after April 23, 2010 Southwest Airlines will charge $50 each way ($100 roundtrip) in addition to the air fare per child for Unaccompanied Minors to travel.
  • UMs may only travel on nonstop or direct flights (makes one or more stops, but does not require a change of planes or flight numbers).
  • Shared itineraries, or AirTran-only itineraries booked through Southwest channels, cannot be purchased for Unaccompanied Minors. Learn More
  • Southwest will not transport UMs on flights that may be diverted or cancelled due to inclement weather or other operational abnormalities.

  • If you're traveling with an infant or small child, you should know that proper use of a Child Restraint System (CRS) enhances child safety onboard the aircraft.
  • Southwest Airlines and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) strongly recommend that infants and small children weighing less than 40 pounds be secured in an appropriate CRS when traveling by air. Full Details
  • If you choose to travel with your infant on your lap, you must obtain a Boarding Verification Document (BVD) for the infant so that they can board the aircraft. Be sure to bring a copy of your infant's birth certificate to the airport for age verification. Learn More
  • If your child is traveling on an Infant or Child fare and is age verified, you may request his/her boarding pass on southwest.com.
  • If your child is traveling on an Infant or Child fare and is not age verified, you must provide valid proof of age at the airport when exchanging the confirmation number for a boarding pass. Learn More

  • Pack baby items separately so you can find them quickly and easily.
