Visit Syracuse.

Syracuse has long been a major crossroads in Central New York—first via canals, then railroads, and now thanks to Syracuse Hancock International Airport, the biggest airport in the region. This means that as much as there is to see and do in the ’Cuse, you might find yourself taking advantage of the area’s history as a hub and hopping aboard a flight to somewhere new after taking in the area.

To get a taste of Syracuse, head to the Armory Square neighborhood downtown for local retailers and eating establishments. Armory Square is also home to the Shot Clock Monument; this 24-second countdown was born in Syracuse, and the monument includes its own timer. If you find yourself hungry for more local flavor, try Hanover Square next, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. There are 26 distinct, city-recognized neighborhoods to explore inside city limits—see what you’ll discover.

If you want to venture outside of town and spend some time in the great outdoors, consider taking advantage of Syracuse’s proximity to the Finger Lakes. Onondaga Lake is closest to Syracuse, though it’s not technically one of the Finger Lakes (but some folks call it “the 12th Finger Lake” anyway), so you’ll have to head further west to start that particular adventure. If you stick around Onondaga Lake Park, consider visiting the Salt Museum. Syracuse was built on the salt industry—explore this unique history then enjoy the rest of the park via the East Shore Recreation Trail, the West Shore Trail, or the Shoreline Walking Trail.
