While the nickname City of the Violet Crown may be shared with Athens, Greece, this moniker may not just be a nod to early Austinites’ predilection for calling their burg the Athens of the South. Though the stars are big and bright at night in the heart of Texas, during twilight you can enjoy a stunning example of the Belt of Venus: the purple-pink glow along the horizon. No matter where the nickname originated, when you land at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport the glow of Austin will be one of many sights to take in during your visit.
Longtime Austin denizens know all the area’s quirks and may even claim that it’s a bit too commercial for their tastes but being a thriving hub of industry and tourism just means that there’s more of Austin to love! The Rainey Street Historic District is a great example of old meeting new. What was once a working-class neighborhood is now on the National Register of Historic Places, its single-family bungalows hosting a mixture of families and thriving nightlife. Step back in time with an afternoon or evening in the area.
