The Island of Hawaii is the biggest island in the Hawaiian archipelago. With two active volcanoes—Kilauea and Mauna Loa—green, black, and white sand beaches, diverse wildlife, and mouthwatering local specialties like Loco Moco, the reasons to fly into Kona are endless. The number one draw for many is the vast number of beaches. No matter which side of the island you choose to explore, you’re guaranteed to find beautiful stretches of coastline. Punaluu Black Sand Beach is one of the most well-known destinations to see black sand as well as honu, Hawaiian green sea turtles. For the biggest white sand beach on the island, head over to Hapuna Beach Park. Fancy green instead? Papakolea Green Sand Beach has you covered, with hiking trails and bay views to boot.
For those brave enough to try their hand at surfing, the Island of Hawaii offers plenty of opportunities. Historically, surfing was called the Sport of Kings in Hawaii and only available to royalty. Today, the waves are free to everyone. Popular spots for beginners include Pine Trees Beach and Kahaluu Beach in Keauhou, while Honolii Beach Park is the place to be for advanced wave riders. Regardless of your skill level, don’t forget to check in with the beach lifeguards about water conditions before hopping on your board.
