The Magic City—home to a thriving nightlife scene, world-class art galleries, breathtaking sandy beaches, and the best Cuban food you’ll eat outside the country itself. Get acquainted with the vibrancy of the area by starting off your trip with a visit to the Art Deco Historic District in Miami Beach. Walking along Ocean Drive and Collins Avenue, you can admire the pastel hotel and restaurant buildings with nostalgic neon signs that characterize this dynamic neighborhood. If you want to see more architecture, design, and art, head over to the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM). Architecturally significant in its own right, this concrete, glass, and wood modernist building houses an extensive permanent collection of contemporary art.
Of course, no visit to Miami would be complete without plenty of time spent soaking up the sun. One popular spot for locals and tourists alike is South Beach, a beautiful white-sand destination located on the southern side of Miami Beach. Clear, shallow water and a generous sandy area make South Beach the perfect spot for swimming, sunbathing, or playing a game of beach volleyball. Equally scenic is Lummus Park Beach, which has grassy areas in addition to sand. Stroll down the promenade and stop at one of the boardwalk restaurants for a snack, catch up on some beachside reading under a palm tree, or head straight to the surf to dip your toes in the bright blue water.
If you need a break from the beach but still want to stay outdoors, the Miami area has plenty more natural landmarks and green areas to visit. Everglades National Park is a quick drive from the city, making it a family-friendly day trip that’s great for learning more about Florida’s ecosystem. These marshy swamplands are home to several native species. Visitors can explore the walking trails or take an airboat tour for a chance to spot some of these species in their natural habitats. For a more urban outdoor destination, check out Bayfront Park, a 32-acre public park in the center of downtown Miami. Tree-lined paved trails, the Challenger spacecraft memorial, an amphitheater, and plenty of green space make Bayfront Park an engaging place to spend an afternoon.
