There’s nothing quite like stepping out of the airport to be greeted by the welcoming signs of paradise: palm trees, sand, and sun. Take the Metrobus, the Metrorail or Tri-Rail, or pick up a rental car when you deplane at Miami International Airport and let your oceanside adventure begin.
Thanks to the Gulf Stream, Miami stays warm all year long—swimsuits are a must! Choosing where to plant your beach umbrella can be overwhelming; try starting with Lummus Park. This popular South Beach spot offers relaxation, sports, and everything in between. If you’re traveling with kids, there are two playgrounds from which to choose. Outdoor gyms and volleyball courts invite visitors to get their heart rates up, but beach access from the park calls you to lay out and dig your toes into the warm sand. Once you’ve had your fill of sand and sun, it’s time for a stroll down Ocean Drive. This world-famous strip of Art Deco hotels and celebrity-run eateries has been featured in countless TV shows and movies. Once you see if for yourself, you’ll understand why!
You can also trade the unparalleled people-watching of South Beach for the sweeping views at Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park. Nestled on southern Key Biscayne, this picturesque state park is best enjoyed from atop the famous Cape Florida Light. This historic lighthouse was built in 1825 to help ships navigate the Florida reef and is the oldest structure in Miami-Dade County. The Cape Florida Light offers its own beaches, as well as bicycling, hiking, swimming, snorkeling, and wildlife viewing. Head over to the on-site nature museum to learn more about this beautiful and unique landscape.
A visit to Miami isn’t complete without exploring Little Havana. Thanks to the large Cuban population, Miami offers an incredible array of landmarks dedicated to Cuban culture. Calle Ocho, Jose Marti Park, and Plaza de la Cubanidad are just a few of the must-see stops in this vibrant neighborhood. Don’t forget to have a snack or meal at one of the cafes, which offer some of the best Cuban food this side of the Caribbean. Take your pick of traditional dishes or the classic Cuban Sandwich. No matter what you choose, your taste buds will thank you.
