When you step off the plane at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport you’re just ten miles south of Charm City—grab a rental car and get going! Like Chicago, Baltimore has deep roots as a working-class city and is known for being a city of neighborhoods. Whether you choose to spend most of your stay in the downtown areas along the port or diving deeper into the unique cultures of each of the city’s historic areas, there’s plenty to explore.
Fuel your adventure with the state’s claim to fame, Maryland blue crabs, prepared with the area’s distinctive seasoning. If you enjoy authentic Italian, explore the restaurants in Little Italy and see how they stand up against the places back home on Taylor Street. Foodies will find a lot to love in the Fells Point neighborhood, which both locals and visitors love as a gastronomic destination.
There’s more to life in Baltimore than its distinctive dialect—but hearing locals pronounce it “Bawlmer” may bring to mind famous depictions of B’more from screen. The accent isn’t the only cultural artifact that calls only Baltimore home. Congress designated the American Visionary Art Museum as the country’s only museum for visionary art, and the first ever wax museum dedicated to historically significant African Americans, the National Great Blacks in Wax Museum, is also in Baltimore. Another proud first? The Peabody Institute, the country’s oldest conservatory of music, is in the Mount Vernon neighborhood. Whatever you choose to explore, Charm City is sure to win a place in your heart.
