If you’re looking to get a taste of something different than Central Florida, there’s only one place to start if your adventures take you to Philly: cheesesteaks. You can find imitations, riffs, and tributes to the sandwich Philly made famous most anywhere Southwest flies. But, as locals will tell you, there’s only one city that can supply the real thing. The sandwich starts with thin sliced beef and a hoagie roll, the rest of the recipe and what constitutes the “right” way to build it is up for debate even within the city limits. Onions? Peppers? Don’t even get people started on Cheez Whiz. Our advice is just to do what you like.
Once your stomach’s full, you’re ready to take on the city. Independence National Historic Park, home of the Liberty Bell, is a must, especially if you’ve never seen them before. Act out a classic movie scene by running up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. While you’re there you may as well give the exhibits inside a look too. Finish up at John F. Kennedy Plaza, better known as LOVE Park, while you plot your next moves.
Wherever you go—and however you decided to build your cheesesteak—refresh yourself after a long day with a water ice for dessert. When said with a distinct Philadelphia-area accent, the local treat may sound more like “wooder” ice. The smoother cousin to Italian ice is a Philadelphia staple, especially during summertime, and can be found in local haunts throughout the city. Water or wooder? That satisfying, icy treat by any other pronunciation would still taste as sweet.
