As one of the biggest metropolitan areas in the country, Houston is big in every sense of the word yet maintains personable and down-home charm. It is full of top dining destinations, lively entertainment options, a dynamic arts scene, and endless shopping—you can easily find something new to see, do, and try during your visit.
Houston is home to America’s space program and there is plenty for any would-be astronaut to do. The Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center is the hub of NASA’s human spaceflight program—learn about space missions, current and former astronauts, listen to lectures, and view engaging exhibits on almost any astronomical subject. For more out-of-this-world exploration, check out the Space Center Houston science museum and see the stunning spaceships of yesteryear up close, including a replica of a space shuttle.
If space isn’t your thing, the Houston Museum District may be more to your liking. Art lovers will be delighted by the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, the Houston Center for Photography, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Nature lovers can enjoy the Houston Museum of Natural Science and the Houston Zoo. The Museum District also features photo-worthy architectural marvels like the Rothko Chapel. Or you can just take a leisurely stroll through Hermann Park and snap a picture of the Sam Houston Monument, a memorial to the former governor and senator for whom the city is named.
Houston’s central business districts, Midtown and Downtown, have an energetic nightlife full of music clubs, concert halls, and entertainment venues. Looking for world-class dining? You’ll certainly find it. Sure, there’s the expected Texas-style cuisine, but there are also numerous ethnic enclaves that feature authentic dishes from Asia, Africa, and Latin America. So be sure to pack your appetite.
Houston offers a unique combination of historical importance and modern-day amenities—so pack your bags and start exploring.
