Whether you’re coming for the extravagant resorts of Paradise Island or the laidback vibe of Nassau, you’ll find your stride in this Caribbean capital. From Cable Beach, a popular island hangout, to Love Beach, a snorkeler’s haven, Nassau features an endless supply of sun and sand. Stay at the sandy swath of Cable Beach, centrally located on the northern coast of the island, for picturesque sunbathing with far fewer crowds. To add a slice of history, try Montagu Beach. It’s home to Fort Montagu, which was built in the 18th century. If you’re looking for more opportunities to scuba dive, snorkel, or even swim with sharks, make your way to the southwest side of the island for a tour. Want an off-island adventure? A 15-minute boat ride will take you to Rose Island, which has a tranquil private beach that also has a bar.

There’s plenty more to do outside beyond the beaches. Bird is the word at Astrada Gardens, Zoo, and Conservation Centre, where flamingos, peacocks, and parrots are the main attraction. Flamingo marches take place three times a day, so be sure to catch a show while you’re there. The Bahamas’ history as a British colony is still evident in its colonial architecture, which can be seen on the facade of Nassau’s government buildings in Parliament Square. While exploring the capital, don’t miss the Supreme Court of the Bahamas and the Senate Building. Art aficionados will enjoy a visit to the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas. This versatile collection is housed in the Villa Doyle, an 1860s-era mansion.
