If you choose to trek out of town to Haleakala National Park, you’ll find it amongst the volcanic ranges, sub-tropical rain forest, and may spot one of the endangered species found only inside the park. The park is split into two districts—Kipahulu and Summit—that offer distinct experiences to visitors. If you want panoramic views of Maui, head to Summit to summit the crater. Don’t forget to bring layers; the peak can be up to 20 degrees colder than the temperature at sea level. Sunrise and sunset at the summit are breathtaking but require reservations—be sure to book in advance. Once you reach the summit, you’ll understand why this place is beloved.

Hungry for more of Maui? Get a taste of authentic Hawaiian cuisine in Kahului. You’ll eat like a local during your visit. When folks who live on Maui “go into town,” they’re referring to Kahului. Being on the shore, seafood is a must-have meal. Fresh ahi tuna is great alone or in a poke bowl.
