Traveling to Lihue with Beach Gear or Sports Equipment

Traveling with a surfboard, snorkel gear, or other sports equipment? We see it all on Southwest Airlines flights to Hawaii, and we welcome you to bring your gear as checked baggage. Just be sure to read our guidelines for flying with a surfboard (they’re short, we promise) and leave a little extra time for check-in. If you have other gear you’re bringing, check out all of our sports equipment pages.

Getting From LIH to Lihue and Nearby Areas

After your flight to Lihue, HI, lands, the most practical way to get around Kauai is by car. Here’s a little more about the transportation:

• Rental cars: Most visitors rely on a rental car to explore, so reserve ahead and pick up at the airport. Poipu is typically about 25–30 minutes away, and Kapaa is around 20–25 minutes in normal traffic.
• Rideshares and taxis: Limited rideshare and taxi service works best for airport transfers or short hops, but availability and pricing can vary, so don’t count on them as your primary way to get around.
• Hotel shuttles: A handful of nearby hotels and resorts may offer airport shuttles. Check directly with your accommodations before you book your flight.

Best Things to do in Kauai
