Since the 20th century, Florida has been a popular destination for retirees fleeing colder states. But the Cuban revolution of the 1950s pushed many wealthy and middle-class Cubans out of the country and into Miami and Key West, Florida. In fact, many Cuban refugees’ documents were processed in the former headquarters of The Miami News, which is now known as the “Ellis Island of the South,” due to the large influx of immigrants. Today, Miami is commonly considered the “Capital of Latin America” due to its large population of Latin Americans—from Cuba, South America, and Central America—as well as its Spanish-speaking population.
