Visit Jackson
When you touch down at Jackson-Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport, you’ll deplane just six miles outside of downtown Jackson. Having undergone a renaissance in the 2010s, the neighborhood is still home to a handful of historic antebellum buildings, including the Mississippi Old Capitol. There are plenty of opportunities to explore the distinct history of the American South when you visit Jackson—grab your rental car and get going.
Having deplaned at an airport named for American civil rights activist Medgar Evers, you may feel inspired to visit the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum. Visitors are drawn through eight galleries in a winding, low-lit circular structure designed to evoke the dark, oppressive experiences of Black Americans throughout the state’s and country’s histories. In the center of these galleries is a bright rotunda into which visitors emerge after walking through each of the previous themed spaces. As more visitors enter the rotunda, the central work of art—an illuminated multimedia sculpture—shines brighter. To continue your exploration of Jackson’s civil rights history—and to spend more time discovering the rich culture of the city—put on your walking shoes and seek out the in-town sites of the Mississippi Freedom Trail.
Music fans may want to explore a different historic trail in Jackson: the Mississippi Blues Trail. Though it’s not a formalized trail, the Mississippi Blues Commission has placed markers at several sites of historical importance to the region’s blues roots. Big blues fans may find that they want to make their way to every Blues Trail Marker—well, get ready to book some additional flights; markers abound beyond Jackson and Mississippi borders, including in Southwest destinations Chicago, Pensacola, and Los Angeles. Lovers of early 20th-century American authors should make their way to the Eudora Welty House Museum or the city library’s main branch that bears her name.
