Visit Lubbock
Tip your hat to the metropolitan hub of the South Plains, a city that boasts rock ‘n’ roll history, agricultural heritage, and an increasingly diverse arts scene. Lubbock maintains its classic West Texas friendliness while offering all of the amenities of a big city, including art and history museums and a smorgasbord of restaurants and eateries. You won’t run short on things to do when you travel to the Hub City.
Located in the heart of downtown Lubbock, the Depot Entertainment District offers visitors a unique entertainment experience complete with toe-tapping music, live theater, and must-see museums. Here you’ll find the Buddy Holly Center, the definitive museum celebrating the beloved musician. In front of the center stands a larger-than-life statue of Holly, which includes his hallmark hornrims. Inside, visitors will find a range of unique memorabilia, including his signature guitar, his stage clothes, and even childhood drawings. The center also houses a fine-arts gallery and the Texas Musicians Hall of Fame, which features ever-changing exhibitions on the music and musicians of the Lone Star State.
When you’re not dancing your way through the Depot Entertainment District, you can visit some of the city’s historic landmarks. Check out the Lubbock Lake Landmark, a time capsule of cultures that have inhabited the South Plains over the last 12,000 years. Bones of animals like wooly mammoths were first unearthed here in the early 1930s when Lubbock Lake’s water table declined. Now, visitors can take part in special events at the site and interact with and observe working excavators and lab crews. To further explore the city’s history, head to the National Ranching Heritage Center, a 27-acre outdoor historical park and museum dedicated to the preservation of North American ranching history. The park includes 48 authentic structures, arranged chronologically from the late 1700s to the mid-1900s, portraying the evolution of ranch life over the years. The museum has galleries and exhibits of art, photography, and artifacts that capture historical and contemporary Western life.
The expansive countryside surrounding Lubbock is another reason to visit. With nearly a dozen nearby canyons and lakes, there are hundreds of miles of land dedicated to hiking, mountain biking, and watersports. Just north of the Hub City is Caprock Canyon State Park, a nature lover’s dreamland with 90 miles of trail near the calm waters of beautiful Lake Theo. The canyon is the perfect location for camping, exploring on bike or horseback, and no-wake boating. No matter what kind of outdoor adventure you choose, you’ll find the area ideal for adrenaline-pumping and relaxing activities alike.
