How to Find Cheap Flights to Snow-Bound Destinations
Need help finding cheap flights to your next winter getaway? Snow problem. Here are a few tips to help you save on flights to snow-bound destinations.
Use the Low Fare Calendar: Check the Southwest Low Fare Calendar before you finalize your travel dates and find the cheapest days to fly.
Book early for peak season: Flights to popular winter vacation destinations fill up quickly, and booking as early as possible will often help you score a cheaper fare.
Travel midweek: Fewer travelers tend to fly on Tuesday and Wednesday flights, so you can frequently score deals on these midweek fares.
Skip the peak: If your schedule is flexible, consider traveling just before or after the busiest winter travel weeks. You'll often find lower fares, fewer crowds, and more availability.
Join Rapid Rewards: Earn points on your qualifying airfare with a free Rapid Rewards membership, then use your points to help pay for your next vacation.
Choosing the Best Time for Your Winter Getaway
The best winter vacation starts with choosing the right time to travel. Weather, snowfall, and experiences can always vary by destination, but these guidelines will help you choose the best time to book your winter vacation.
For the best snow & winter sports: December to March is the most popular travel window for visitors who want to ski or snowboard. Terrain and snowfall are generally at their most consistent in January and February, which also makes those two months the busiest part of the year at ski destinations. Book as early as you can to avoid price increases as flights and ski lodgings fill up.
For holiday magic & seasonal events: Early winter is a great time to visit for families and for anyone else who wants to feel the holiday cheer. Between holiday celebrations, seasonal events, ice skating, and Christmas markets and villages, you’re bound to get into the spirit.
For better value & smaller crowds: On popular mountains, the period from mid-March into late April offers a great bang for your buck. Winter sports are still going strong at many resorts, and longer daylight hours give you more time on the slopes. Because this is a relative off-peak period, it’s a great time to look for deals, and crowds are usually smaller.

As far in advance as you reasonably can. Since winter vacation season is only a few months long, flights and hotel reservations often fill up quickly. Try to book at least three months in advance if possible.
Do I need a rental car?
It depends on your destination and the type of winter getaway you're planning.
