Seattle’s nickname, the Emerald City, is well-earned due to abundant greenery thanks to a mild climate and lots of rain. But for those looking to add a few palm trees and some vitamin D to their lives, make your way to beautiful, sun-drenched Honolulu on the island of Oahu.
If you’re seeking a tropical escape, or just a change of scenery, a trip to Honolulu might be exactly what you need. Pack your best bathing suit for swimming and sunbathing on Oahu’s famous beaches. With over two miles of uninterrupted coastline, you can experience the thrill of surfing at Waikiki Beach, catch an incredible sunset, or embark on a snorkeling adventure at Queens Beach.
For travelers who are seeking a more active vacation, Honolulu’s natural topography lends itself perfectly to hiking. Diamond Head State Monument is a 300,000-year-old crater created by a volcanic eruption that overlooks the island and offers some incredible panoramic views. Hiking the crater is almost required of all Honolulu visitors, as it’s right outside the city limits. Lucky hikers might even catch a view of humpback whales from the top of the crater. Another outstanding, if challenging, hike outside Honolulu is the Koko Crater Trail. Railroad ties act as stairs on the two-mile trail up the side of the crater, rewarding climbers with incredible views.
Visitors to Honolulu will never lack something to do. The Honolulu Zoo and Waikiki Aquarium feature fish, birds, and animals from all around the world. Those who are more interested in the past will appreciate the city’s history as the capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii, as well as Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona Memorial. The design-minded can marvel at Honolulu’s unique architecture, featured prominently in buildings previously used by the Hawaiian monarchy, such as Iolani Palace. The city is fit for foodies as well, with incredible eateries that run the gamut from fine dining to food trucks.
Seattle natives who are looking to take a break from the clouds of the Pacific Northwest can travel to Honolulu for an incredible tropical getaway they’ll never forget. The island of Oahu is calling; you won’t regret answering.
