What to Expect at Kona International Airport (KOA)

When your flight to Hawaii from Austin lands, it won’t take long to notice that Kona International Airport feels a little different from a typical mainland airport (in the best way). KOA’s open-air layout means you may walk down stairs onto the tarmac and spend part of your arrival in semi-outdoor spaces, so dress in lightweight clothes for the warm weather. The airport is smaller and easier to navigate than many major hubs, but keep the airport's semi-outdoor nature in mind if you're traveling with kids or people with medical needs.

Kona International Airport makes a convenient starting point for exploring multiple Hawaiian islands. Since flying is the primary way travelers and locals alike move between islands, you can easily catch short Hawaii inter-island flights connecting the Big Island to Oahu, Maui, and Kauai.
